By 1963, it had become increasingly apparent to Ferrari’s engineering team that the long-running and highly successful 250 GT series of road cars had reached the end of its development potential. Despite the fact that Ferrari was drifting toward a more luxurious base V-12 car, the company still wanted to maintain its fine tradition of dual-purpose sports/racing berlinettas, which had cemented its tremendous sporting reputation. Renowned British racer Michael Parkes, at the time a Maranello works driver, participated in considerable testing to assist in the development of a replacement model for the 250 GT platform. The new car would ultimately continue the traditional features that made the preceding berlinetta models so successful: front-engine architecture punctuated with a long front hood and short rear deck. The resulting 275 GTB debuted to great acclaim at the 1964 Paris Motor Show, setting a new standard for design and power in a Ferrari road car.

As the Gran Turismo Berlinetta nomenclature suffix suggested, the 275 GTB retained the dual-purpose sporting identity of prior Ferrari sports/racers, and the delectable new coachwork built by Scaglietti was undoubtedly an extension of the legendary 250 GTO. The 275 was powered by a further enlargement of Gioacchino Colombo’s classic short-block V-12, which now displaced 3,286 cubic centimeters. Optimal weight balance was achieved by fitting the gearbox directly to the rear axle, in a rear transaxle design that would become a standard practice in many ensuing Ferrari road cars. The 275 GTB is also notable as the first Ferrari for the street to feature independent suspension on all four wheels, an innovation that eventually took hold across automobile manufacturing.

A year after the 275 GTB’s 1964 debut, a second series was unveiled that featured a longer nose, a modification intended to aid aerodynamic downforce at high speeds. Despite the technical improvements, many enthusiasts prefer the first-series cars’ proportions and purity of design. Early short-nose Series I examples remain among the most desirable of all iterations of the 275 GTB non-competition cars, with only approximately 250 examples built.

CHASSIS NUMBER 06899

This 275 GTB left the Ferrari factory finished in Argento (18940 M) over a Nero (VM 8500) interior which was also optioned with the rare and very desirable fabric center seat sections. It was built as a short-nose in left-hand-drive configuration destined for the Italian market. On 23 March 1965 a certificate of origin was issued, and it was sold new seven days later by M. Gastone Crepaldi Automobili S.a.s., the official dealer in Milan, to Luigi Delle Paine for 5,750,000 lire. Luigi would register his new Ferrari on Italian license plates of Bergamo under tag “BG 119897.” On 4 May 1965 the car was sent down to be serviced for the first time by Ferrari in Modena.

A few months later, on 2 July 1965, the car once again returned to Ferrari, as it was believed to be experiencing engine issues, at which point the troublesome original engine was swapped out with a factory replacement unit carrying internal number 122/64, which was correctly stamped 06899 by the factory. This engine remains in the car today, while the original engine for chassis 06899 was rebuilt, restamped, and installed in another car that was then delivered new with that unit as its original engine—ensuring that the engine currently in chassis 06899 is the only unit correctly stamped 06899 from the factory.

By the fall of 1966 the 275 GTB was listed for sale in Road & Track magazine in Sweden. The car would remain in Sweden under various ownerships, eventually finding a home with Ulf Boman in 1975. Under Boman’s ownership the car was registered under Swedish plates “ESF 214” and the car was repainted yellow, the fuel filler was moved to the outside of the car, and the radio antenna was removed. The Ferrari was featured in the Ferraristi Svezia club magazine, issue number 2. Boman would go on to race the 275 GTB at various events in Scandinavia and Europe, most notably in 1976 where it donned race #59 in the Rallye International Cognac in France.

The Ferrari was purchased from Boman by Lou Tarantolo and exported from Sweden to the United States. It is believed that around this time the car was refinished in red prior to being offered for sale in the Chicago Tribune in late 1979 with 70,000 kilometers. It was purchased in 1979 by Bernard R. Nevoral of Burr Ridge, Illinois. Nevoral would own the car until 2008, when in the early part of the year he commissioned Wayne Orby’s Motion Products, Inc. (MPI) of Neenah, Wisconsin, to prepare the car for sale. He sold the car in September 2008 to John Weinberger’s Continental Auto Sports in Hinsdale, Illinois, who in turn sold the car to John Haugh of Berea, Ohio.

In 2017 the 275 GTB returned to MPI, this time for a comprehensive restoration. Chassis 06899 was brought back to its original Argento over Nero seats with grey cloth inserts, and during the restoration the outside fuel filler was changed back to its original inner trunk location. In January 2018 the car earned a Platinum Award at the XXVII Palm Beach Cavallino Classic Concours d’Elegance held at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida—a true testament to the high-quality restoration.

It was acquired by the present ownership in March 2019. More recently the car went through the Ferrari Classiche Certification process at Cauley Ferrari of Detroit, officially earning Ferrari Classiche Certified status in 2026 and confirming the presence of its original body, factory replacement engine, and a correct type gearbox. While a Red Book has yet to be printed for the car at time of cataloguing, a digital copy is available for prospective buyers. A Red Book will be mailed to the buyer once printed. The Ferrari is accompanied by a tool roll, spare set of Borrani wire wheels, and a history file which includes a Massini report.
