One of the most appealing - yes indeed we said appealing, not appalling- cars in the Monaco sale by RM Sotheby's is without a shade of doubt this 1978 Mercedes-Benz 280 TE Estate . And not only because of its incredible durability and ultra usabiliy. Let's start where we start to discuss about any classic in a Monaco sale: the design.
Maybe the car is not your cup of tea but in our view the Mercedes cars designed by Bruno Sacco as a group are the very best looking post-war Benzes so far. One of Sacco's famous statements is: "If you like a new Mercedes at first sight, my design has failed." Typical 'Bruno'cars are the famous refined understatement of his S-Klasse, the SEC models that were very popular with F1 pilots after work. And finally the ubiquiteous W123. Known around the world for being the most reliable taxi ever and forever.
In the early days of PreWarCar when cash was short we found ourselves a very well used 1979 300 Turbodiesel Automatic. There was no history with the car, but according to experts it was near or over 1.000.000 km. It was slow, it was sluggish, and the interior showed the signs of having been in use by a contractor for 20 years at least. To be honest it was worn out in all respects. But during the five years it served our family it gobbled luggage, big and ugly car parts. Family and friends and clients. And it never, never, never missed a beat. We finally had big problems getting rid of the car. Until a producer of theater shows turned up and bought the car for use in an outdoor show! In the months following we saw our family car from Amsterdam on stage in Berlin, Moscow, St. Petersburg. The W123 is forever.
We understand that the specific car depicted above has an estimate of € 6.000-8.000. Now what is your educated guess that the car will bring? Check the auction description first. After that post your guess as a comment. The number being closest to the hammerprice + costs will win. Comments & winner will be published after the Monaco sale.
