When was the last time you saw a Gilbern GT? The ‘Poor Man’s Aston Martin’, built in a rural Welsh workshop has always been rare, but it’s only in the last few years that they appear to become valued, with prices now quickly rising. Opponents have always hailed it as a kit car (which it isn’t), due to fibreglass and borrowed engines, ranging from A-H Sprite to Coventry Climax and from MGA to Corvair V4. But best choice was the MGB’s trustworthy 1800 which most later GTs have. With some 277 cars built the pretty GT is not only 1894 times rarer as the MGB - it is lighter and slightly faster too. But it has nothing of the sporty background as the ‘B’, I hear you say? Not completely so as at least one works racer, supercharged, was built in 1965 and raced throughout ‘65-‘69. As a matter of fact I stumbled upon that car recently and couldn’t think of anything else for days! (text & photo Jeroen Booij)
