Marcos owners, enthusiasts and personalities of Europe, those of the Benelux and Germany in particular, used to gather every year for their ‘Euregio Meeting’. But somehow the event fell into oblivion and a decade passed. But not forever. Last weekend, it made its return to The Netherlands where a select, but happy bunch catched up to talk about their cars and have a drive over winding b-roads. Surprise of the day was Aad van Beekum’s beautifully restored 1968 Mini Marcos, which he drove for the first time in the 17 years he’s owned it.
It was only surpassed by Remco Bruins’ fantastic 1600 GT, again of 1968-vintage. Remco fully restored the car, including its infamous wooden chassis, which consists of a multitude of pieces (386 of them!) glued together. Remco believes the wooden chassis cars to be safer as apposed to their later steel sisters, due to the absorbing qualities of wood. The car’s Ford 1600 engine was mildly tuned by adding a Lotus Cortina crossflow head and looked superb, too. The best thing is that, despite its state, this GT is used well. Remco took it to Italy to take the Stelvio pass recently and is not afraid of severe weather conditions either. Good lad!
