The trouble with camping is that it can be terribly uncomfortable, can’t it? As long as the sun shines it’s great fun to sleep in a tent, cook on a fire and sit around in your shorts, but as soon as the sunshine gives way to drizzle, or worse, a thunderstorm, the pleasure of the great outdoors vanishes with it.
This was the 1960s’ solution to sudden downpours – glamping avant la lettre with the top-of-the-range luxury car of its time towing a caravan like no other. The car is a four-door Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman Limousine of 1963 and it does indeed pull – a twin-axle Eifelland caravan with roof terrace in this particular case. We couldn’t find out much about Eifelland's mobile home, no doubt its premium offering, but we expect it will be like a German holiday bungalow of the time on the inside, or perhaps even fancier than that. Both car and caravan are painted white to absorb as little heat as possible from that burning sun, but that won’t be problem for long as it’s bound to turn overcast in a moment. Inside, all creature comforts have no doubt been thought of and included.
It’s a bit on the heavy side, do you think, to haul along the Routes Nationales or mountain passes of southern Europe? Well, the almost three-tonne Mercedes should be able to cope with that, thanks to its 241 bhp V8 and all-round disc brakes. We just hope they remembered to fill up the 112-litre fuel tank…
