The Ennstal Classic has become Austria’s major classic car event with plenty to see and do for visitors. The village of Gröbming, situated in the heart of Austrian passes and cols area, actually became the Austrian equivalent of Brescia last weekend when the 23th edition of the historic rally took place there. From the village centre 197 cars were taken to the hills surrounding it and although the majority of them came from within Austrian territory (with a huge contingent of Porsches), there were Swiss, Germans, Dutch, Belgians and Portugese entries, too. Last year even saw three teams from the USA, among them the marvellous Healey Elliott seen above.
We reckon it’s still a bit of an undiscovered gem, this rally, with the Mille Miglia now having grown into an over-hyped larger than life event. With so many great roads within direct reach and a fairly relaxed programme (the 900kms route is spread over three days with averages of 40 and 50 km/h) the Ennstal Classic may well be the perfect ‘jolly’.
