The Lubra Mystery

Many years ago we saw this poster hanging on a garage wall and were immediatelely intrigued. No, not what you think… we wondered about the make Lubra as we had never heard of this oil company. And the strange thing is that the text on the poster is in Italian, but the two girls are driving what looks like an American car of the late 1940s. Can you tell us more about Lubra Motor Oils?

This motor oil was possibly only distributed after the end of World War 2 by the company Corbella based in Milan.
The poster is a design of the well-known Italian illustrator and graphic artist Bertoletti Giulio (°17/6/1919 Pergine Valsugana - 13/9/ 1976 Sant'Angelo Lodigiano+).
Bertoletti found some military propaganda posters from the 1940s, such as those created to celebrate some soldiers decorated with the Gold Medal. After the war, Bertoletti illustrated some covers of the weekly magazine "Grand Hotel" and drew some advertising posters ("Lubra"), further approaching the slightly feuilleton style of Walter Molino. Bertoletti illustrated the covers of several European weeklies, and publicity posters of various kinds
(AA.VV., Catalogo Bolaffi del Manifesto Italiano, Giulio Bolaffi Editore, Turin 1995).
Arti Grafiche E. Oriani - Bresso - Milano, was the publisher of this original artwork.
Approximate period prior to 1949 until possibly early 1950s.
Version: cardboard/ photo-chromolithography, dimensions 100.3 x 69.3 cm.
