Crumbling Cortina tin and Gestalt Psychology

Spotted at the kay of the ferry Dover-Calais. Car #259 just has returned from historic stock car races at the circuit of Aldershot Speedcircuit. Historic Stock Car Racing, think about that for a few seconds. You've scrapped your stock car at the races 40 or 50 years ago and you kept the remains in order to participate in 2016...

Still we wanted to bring up something else. Despite the fact that trimmings, lights, bumpers and more are missing it is unmistakingly a Cortina. It is the power of 'Gestalt Psychology' a theory that was shaped in the beginning of the last century with the basic assumption "the whole is other than the sum of the parts". In this particular example this means in our view that tens, hundreds or many thousands of small details lead to the assumption of our brain that we are looking at a Ford Cortina. It appears that even when we take out dozens of Cortina details that our brain still is recognising the overall shape, lines & dimensions of a Cortina. One can wonder, how much should be taken away from the car in order not to be able to recognise the car as a Cortina. Think about that as well. Have a great week.
