The #1 Cunningham Racing Corvette Unveiled (Upd. Serious doubts!)

For the 1960 24 Hours of Le Mans, Briggs Cunningham fielded three Corvettes of which this one was lost, or should we say, stored in a warehouse for more than fifty years. It was found by Richard Carr who cleaned out the warehouse where his dad kept his belongings for many years. While sifting through the stuff, he discovered the Corvette, a maroonish brown mess, covered in dust and dirt. There are no headlights, the hard top has been replaced by a soft top and rust is visible everywhere. The find was unveiled last week to a select public at the Corvettes at Carlisle event where it was positioned next to the #3 Corvette. The present owner of #1 wishes to remain anonymous but has promised that it will be restored to its original 1960 racing specs. Let's hope #1 will not return to obscurity and that it's restoration allows it to sit side by side with the other two Cunningham Corvettes.

Update by editor: After the presentation to a select group the Corvette was to be presented to the general public at the Corvette Show. But what we didn't know when we wrote this article is that just prior to the opening of the event, the Corvette was withdrawn due to a claim by a Florida resident that it was his Corvette which was stolen 35 year ago. See here for the story at Corvetteblogger.com. We'll keep you posted on what's happening next!
