That other Daytona coupe

All eyes are on the manicured lawns of Pebble Beach today, where the cream of the crop of mouth-watering classic car creations is ready to be judged by men in straw hats and bow ties. There will be plenty of shiny Ferraris, Duesies and Bugattis, but there are some less obvious classes, too. From a Post War point of view ‘Designs by Carrozzeria Touring’ will be interesting, as will be Cunningham cars, Mercury Customs and 75 years of the Lincoln Continental.

Our favourite is classed in the 50 years of Shelby category: it’s the Peter Brock designed Shelby Daytona Coupe of Kazuo Maruyama, who bought the car as a fan of Kamm tail designs (he has several more interesting cars showing this aerodynamical feature). Maruyama’s car is the last of six Daytona Coupes built and was seen driven by his son Kotaro along the winding coastal roads of California for the event’s ‘tour d’élégance’. What’s even better is that the car will make it to this year’s Goodwood Revival only to be joined by its five sister cars - four of which now live around the US and one in Switzerland. What a fantastic sight that’s going to be! Perhaps it’s no coincidence that this statement was released last month?
