Towards the end of the 1950s the Woodie became the vehicle of choice among California surfers, who loved its ability to carry the whole gang and their boards. The woodie’s cult status was ensured when Jan & Dean released their hit single ‘Surf City’. This 1948 Pontiac is the last of what might be termed the 'real' Woodies, when the entire rear body structure was made of timber. Made at the Ypsylanti Furniture Co in Michigan, the body of this Woodie incorporates 523 parts from either mahogany or Canadian maple. Surviving '48 Pontiac Woodies are rare; perhaps there are fewer than fifty on the road in North America, and this one is believed to be the only one in Europe. It will be offered by Bonhams at their sale during the 'Weekend de l'Excellence Automobile' at the French Grand Prix circuit of Reims-Gueux on September 11th.
