Soon to race Chateau Impney's drive

Few locations seem to ooze the atmosphere of the golden age of postwar British motor sports like Chateau Impney does. And so it’s also just the right setting for a classic car sale, organized by H&H on 11 July. With such a great heritage in hill climbing it may not be a surprise that some fine racing cars will be offered there. A beautiful and rare (one of 44) Chevron B8 for example, originally sold to a former national hill climb champion and with a chequered history throughout its life spanning from the UK to Italy and South-Africa.

If even that is not competitive enough to you, H&H offers another Chevron: a B23, which was factory updated to a later style (B36) body when it was three years old. This car was also raced in South-Africa, Italy and the UK but also in Spain and the US giving it great provenance. There are some single-seaters, too, from this lovely 1961 Mk2 Dolphin to a Lystonia 73C: a miniature racer for competitive kids with 125cc engine and the looks of an early ‘70s F1.

But production cars have always been hill climbing favourites and there are several to choose from. This particularly nice Ford Escort RS 1600 ‘Evocation’ (above) won a racing series recently and should be very fast on the Impney drive in the right hands. An equally fat road legal racer is this 1966 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT in the right colour and spec. There is, however, one more car that may not fit into the racing theme but that shouts for some attention here (we think): a very rare Allard Palm Beach Mk2. It’s one of just six made and this has just been restored meticulously by two members of the Allard family. You may not want to race this one on the Chateau Impney drive, but all the other days of the year it will make you a great entrance there.
