Paul McCartney's drowned Lamborghini

Today its fifty years ago: the Beatles first album came out. You probably know, as most media cover that. So we add a little twist and probably launch the first Beatle car album. And, yes, in these past five decades the Fab Four had some fabulous cars. Much has been said about that, too. You will know about John’s psychedelically painted Phantom V, the 600 Pullmans that John, George and Ringo owned, the Radford Minis that all four of them had (Ringo’s was converted into a hatchback so hat he could carry his drums in it), George’s DB5, Paul’s recently restored DB6, Ringo’s Facel Vega HK500, John’s Ferrari. But how about Paul’s Lambos? He owned a 400GT in 1967 that was sold for a fortune recently but there was also an Espada some years later. And there’s a funny story about that. According to the book ‘Stars, Cars & Infamy’, “Someone phoned about an ad for the car. The owner’s secretary picked the phone up and said: ‘Come and have a look,’ giving him directions to an address. When he got there it was McCartney selling the car. He showed him around the car - red, with a fairly hideous matching red interior. He was quite taken with it, was getting on well with the ex-Beatle, and about to make an offer when McCartney said: ‘Look, I don’t want to sell it to you. I like you, and to be honest, it’s not a good car.’ It turned out that Linda McCartney had left it parked one night with the handbrake off and it had rolled into a pond. After three days, Sir Paul pulled it out because a Lambo in the lake isn’t very ecological. Because of some kind of emotional attachment to it, he had it rebuilt for around 70,000 pounds. ‘But if you want a Lamborghini that’s mint, and has never been in a pond,’ he said, ‘this isn’t the one’.   "Drive my car...?"
