In the late 1960s both Porsche and Volkswagen needed new models to replace the outdated VW Karmann Ghia and Porsches 912. As a result two new models were marketed, the 4-cylinder Volkswagen 914/4 and the 6-cylinder Porsche 914/6. Soon after their appearance they were nicknamed VolksPorsches or Vopo’s. VW didn’t like that at all, as it was also the name of the East-German police. so quite soon they were renamed as Porsches, especially in the US. Seen here is a 914/6 that has been uprated to GT-specification. This was a kit of high performance parts, quite rare as only around 400 GT kits were available for dealers and customers and fewer than 50 GT package-equipped cars were assembled by the Porsche factory. This 914/6 is one of the many Porsches that will be offered by Coys during their “the Excellence of Porsche” Auction on September 4, 2011.
Update: trivial knowledge: Running for the Vopo's was a sad thing of sixties Berlin. Better memories are attached to the Jack Sheldon vs. Bruce Gordon sitcom 'Run Buddy Run!
