Ricart's Winged Horse

If you visited Rétromobile in February you can't have failed to notice the grand display of Pegaso sports cars – 14 examples in total, surely the largest gathering of the marque in recent memory. It's fair to say interest in the Spanish supercars has never been higher than it is now. With a technologically advanced all-aluminium, quad-overhead camshaft V-8 engine designed by ex-Alfa Romeo engineer Pagani under guidance from Wifredo Ricart, and with a mere 86 examples built, a Pegaso offers all the performance and excitement of a contemporary Ferrari or Maserati but in an even more exclusive package.

The trouble with this exclusivity is that it means few enthusiasts get the chance to see one of these 'winged horses' in person, let alone have to opportunity to own and drive one. Most of the roughly 65 examples accounted for are still in their native Spain, with only a handful in the hands of international collectors. Perhaps the only example on the road in the UK is owned by Douglas Blain, Publisher of The Automobile, who gives us a glimpse of the rare pleasure of Pegaso Z102 ownership in the latest issue of that magazine, which is out now. The suitably glamorous photographs are by Nick Clements.
