Remembering Marilyn

If you were really lucky in 1953 you could simply see Norma Jeane Dougherty driving her black Cadillac Eldorado on the streets of LA, where she was regularly spotted on the streets. Dougherty, by the time known as Marilyn Monroe, was already rocketing to become world’s number one sex symbol. She was given the Cadillac by comedian Jack Benny after having made her television debut in his show. And it wasn’t a particular plain present. From the late 1940s-on American motoring manufacturers were having a competition who could offer the most sumptuous and luxurious car. Cadillac won with their Eldorado, which, in 1953, came at twice the price of a slightly more common convertible from their stables. The almost 20 feet long and 2.5 tonnes heavy Eldorado did justice to its name, with electrically adjustable seats, electrically operated windows plus a climate control system as well as a rain sensor before these were named so. Monroe married honkball player Joe DiMaggio in 1954, who gave her another Eldorado. Mysteriously and despite several searching attempts, both cars have never resurfaced. But Marilyn seemed equally happy with a rugged Land Rover (above) or a modest Singer. Although not all may have been what it seemed. She passed away today in 1962 before anyone could ask. May she rest in peace.
