Which are the classics of the future? What will be collectors’ items in a few years? Some of the questions one quite often hears when having a discussion about cars. Often the response is the cars that their parents drove or the car they drove when going to college. For many of you, this might be a VW Beetle, a Citroen 2CV or perhaps an MGB. For me, born in the late eighties, it was the BMW E30 that I used to go to university with. I had several, the last one being a lovely Burgundy red convertible (well… red and some crispy brown at some places) and I enjoyed driving it open, even in wintertime.
When I scrolled through our marketplace, I therefore got enthusiastic when I saw one that is for sale. And I was asking myself, will this be in my garage in a few years? The answer is YES!
The one offered is a 325i from 1991, for sale at OldtimerFarm in Belgium with only 78.000 km’s on the meter. Not much info is given, only that the car has 170 bhp and the colour is diamond black, but we remember the quality of such a car. The car is priced at € 25.950, which seems a bit high if I compare it with those that I bought, but who knows, it might well be worth double this price in a few years. A good original one without dents and rust will most likely be looked for by people like myself.
The question is: what do you think? Will this BMW E30 320i be a collector’s item in the future?
So beeing in the mid fifties I like the older ones better every year! Right now I have a car from almost any decade from the 70´s back to the 30´s, but none of the 40´s. So far there is not one car I would like to own that my parents had, but on the other hand my father stll has a nice 190SL since the early 60´s as a summer driver, a Merc W123 230E and a VW T2 camper both in restorable condition.
So will the E30 convertible become a collectors item? Yes, it allready is, if prices are picking up, the valley of the lowest value is left and the car gets in the focus of people wanting someting sensible and fun to drive. Yes! But making money with it! You don´t believe in that,do you?
Earning money in the old car trade is something that only certain dealers achieve, but the individual who buys a vehicle, drives and pampers it, will in most cases some years later not recover all his expenses. But on the other hand, buying a nice 325 E30 con might give you lots of fun and in afew years you might be able to sell it for the price you paid plus a part of monetary devaluation. Wich is not bad opposed to your new "Asten-Jagurati" wich will be down by 70% from your paid price. The good thing is you never know wich car will hit the top price section in future, so buy the car you like, as you will never know what will be on top in the future. Did you expect a early Samba Bus high up the wish-list? I certaily didn´t.
Kind regards from Tyrol, Thomas
