PostWarClassic of the week: 1954 Auto Union DKW Karmann Kabriolett

When going through the PostWarClassic.com market place, we quite often are suprised by the most amazing cars that are around. For example, this 1954 Auto Union DKW Karmann Kabriolett. We contacted the seller to find out more about this beautiful and very rare car.

This type of cars was built in a small number at Karmann in Osnabruck, Germany and at the end of 1953, this 4 seat convertible was ordered by Baptista Co Elho, a high court judge in Lisbon, Portugal. He was very thrifty with the car and used it in the summer with his wife and two daughters when going on holiday to France and Spain.
Unfortunately in 1974 the DKW was parked in the garage in his summerhouse to prevent it from being damaged during the carnation revolution. Baptista didn't want to become a victim of an attack and he also didn't want to be seen as a fascist when he was driving such an exclusive car.
The DKW stood still in the garage for 10 years before the German Peter Runte moved to a house in the area and because he had a real passion for two-stroke engines, he convinced the judge (who was by that time an elderly man) to sell the car to him.

The trip back from the garage of the judge to its new place was an adventure itself. Peter drove the tow-car and son Michael was sitting in the DKW with just a small rope between the two cars. As Peter likes to drive a bit fast, Michael was very happy when they returned home.
The car was not driving at that moment as the crankshaft was broken, so a new one needed to be found. Well, in Portugal that was impossible, so another 10 years passed before a new enthusiast became the new owner. Someone who already had more than 300 cars and is well known for having the cars locked up in garages with welded doors(see Portugese Barnfind). The man is named Antonia Almeida and the DKW would fit perfectly in his collection.

Around the year 2000, Antonio's son was enthusiastic enough to convince his father to restore the cars and they started with the DKW. The body was repainted, a new interior was fitted etc but the engine was not done, so the cranckshaft was still broken and made a lot of noise.
In 2009, the current owner heard about the DKW Convertible and flew over to Portugal, where he was picked up by Antonio in a Porsche 356 and after they had lunch together, the doors of the building were opened and there it was: the DKW he was looking for.
The engine was making the most terrible noise and the brakes didn't work properly, but as often with old cars, you only see the good things and a deal was made.
About a month later, the car was again in a new garage and the first point on the to-do list was to find a new engine, which was found through the DKW-club. The brakes were overhauled and some other stuff was done and after that the car was running perfectly. Since that moment more than 15.000 km's are driven with a big smile and each event was done on own wheels. It drives easily 130 km/h on the highway.

The car is for sale for the price of just under € 40.000 and comes with all the history and some very rare reserve parts.
