Finding good photos for our daily magazine items is sometimes not so easy. So we are always happy when readers send in suitable photos, and we get cheerful when we hear a ping and find something nice in our mailbox.
And as a matter of fact Porsche AG did so, with some great old pictures of 356s and 550s towing skiers over frozen lakes. Did we know this was in fact a popular sport in the 1950s? We didn’t. Porsche AG wrote: “Car races on frozen tracks pulled huge crowds in the middle of the 20th century. The Ice Race in Zell-am-See on the upcoming weekend is reviving this tradition.”
Well, the actual event took place on the 19th and 20th so we missed it, but it seems to have been fun never the less, despite the overwhelming Porsche / VW branding / marketing machine behind it. The so-called skijoring seems favourite to everyone, with a skier being pulled behind a car travelling flat out on ice and snow.
“Ice races and Skijoring thrilled the folk in Zell am See for forty years. We are now reinterpreting this legendary event and bringing it back from the wilderness,” said Ferdinand Porsche, great-grandson of the famous company founder. In fact he lives in Zell-am-See and was one of the men behind the races.
