Please enlighten us about this body style

Sometimes it’s a bit of a challenge to find two cars that are evenly matched for our famous ‘Back to back’ features. Other times, however, they are right there. And it’s clearly the case with Osenat’s sale on May 1.

One collector decided it was time to part with his car collection of British 1950s saloons and dropheads. Hang on, looking at the pictures, they seem to come from the collection of the Feidt family, better known for their Bugattis (which are for sale too), but we may be wrong. Anyway: you can’t tell them for having a consistent taste in British convertibles as the three cars seen above are strikingly matched to each other. From top to bottom they are a 1952 Alvis TA21 convertible with body by Tickford, a 1952 Daimler Conquest drophead coupe and a 1949 Bentley Mk6 convertible by Park Ward.

Now, who said that in the 1950s cars were really different from each other and every design was easily recognizable as coming from which manufacturer? We had to look twice to see which is which. Chronologically looking, the special bodied Bentley was first in line, with the Alvis following swiftly and the Daimler closing the line (note its incorporated wings). But there have to be more of them, and we wouldn’t be surprised to learn of earlier similar models either. So this time we’re not asking you for your personal favourite. Perhaps you will be able to enlighten us about this particular body style?
