Pebble Beach 2015: RM versus Bonhams

Both RM as Bonhams will be organizing a sale centred around the Pebble Beach action scene next month: Bonhams at Carmel on August 14; RM at Monterey on August 15. And they both bring along a star-studded collection of expensive motorcars. Ferraris galore, as well as some Jags and Astons bound to sell for top money. But there are some nice exceptions to the obvious million dollar motors, too, with both auctioneers offering a gorgeous Ghia Supersonic: Bonhams brings over a 1953 Fiat 8V which supposedly was in the same ownership for more than four decades (above); RM comes up with a 1952 XK120 (that was sold by Bonhams not too long ago) and it will be interesting to see how the market for these grand tourers will develop.

The Supersonics aren’t the only overlap on the two separate sales. Apart from all the Ferraris (RM’s best one has to be a pretty California Spider; Bonhams’ this 212 Inter by Vignale) both houses also offer a groovy little Siata. Bonhams' red example is a 1952 Bertone bodied 300BC Sport Spider; RM’s blue one a Daina Gran Sport by Farina. The best of the two? Hard to say, although we have our preferences.

Quirkiest car of the weekend is without doubt the 1949 Veritas Scorpion cabriolet: a road-going version of the Rennsport car with aerodynamic styling by British draughtsman Benjamin Bowden. RM, on the other hand, offer some wild Americans: a 1956 Kurtis 500S for example with small-block Chevy engine and Tremec five-speeder. Two worlds apart - which is yours?

PS: did we almost forget the third party! Gooding & Company will use the hammer here as well.
