Today is the start of the first big car show of 2023, InterClassics Maastricht. The PostWarClassic.com team is present and today we would like to present the cars we have on our stand. In addition to a beautiful pre-war Bugatti (more on that at PreWarCar.com) is an extraordinary post-war classic. It's the first supercar to come from Japan and probably also the most celebrated Japanese car ever: the Toyota 2000GT.
As Japan's first supercar, the 2000GT is one of the most important and valuable Japanese cars ever made. Only 351 examples were built between 1967 and 1970.
It was an extremely modern car for its time, with its 150 bhp, two-litre DOHC straight-six engine and its five-speed gearbox, which give it a maximum speed of 220 km/h (137 mph). All-round servo-assisted disc brakes, a limited-slip differential and coil springs attached to double wishbones were all state-of-the-art technology for 1967, but they’re appropriate for such a hallowed car.
The Toyota that is on the PostWarClassic.com stand is offered by classic car dealer Bastian Voigt. The car was originally sold new in Japan in the first year of production, 1967. It was ordered in Pegasus White with a black interior and a manual gearbox. Like the vast majority of 2000GTs, it was built to right-hand drive specification.
Until 2013 the car stayed in Japan where it is said to have had only two owners. It was then sold to Great Britain where it had one registered owner, before being sold to the current German owner in 2015.
Its overall condition is excellent and it retains its original, matching-numbers engine. The car was once painted silver but has since been repainted in its original white. It was partially restored in Japan around 2005. The interior is in a remarkably well-kept original condition, which suggests that the low mileage reading of only 22,765 km is true. This is backed up by pictures from Japan prior to the restoration, but we do not have full documentation to confirm this.
This stunning 1967 Toyota 2000GT is appearing on the stand of PreWarCar.com and PostWarClassic.com (Stand N.746) for the whole duration of InterClassics Maastricht, which runs until Sunday. We hope to see you there.
