As you might have read earlier this week on PreWarCar.com and PostWarClassic.com, the Classic Sprint takes place this weekend in the Almühltal valley. We’ve given you our advice on where to watch the cars, but we would also like to share our pictures with you. The PreWarCar.com team is participating in a 1911 Knox type R, the oldest car in the field.
We will keep updating this page over the next couple of days. Enjoy.
Last night, the Altmühltal Classic Sprint rally started from a very busy Jakobsplatz in historic Nuremberg. With over 100 cars participating, it was quite the sight to behold in the evening sun. At least, it was for a few minutes, until the sun disappeared and we ended up with rain. We were glad we didn't forget to take our jackets with us after the last couple of warm days.
The first checkpoint was in a typical German town named Zirndorft, after which there was a time trial a few kilometres further along in rural Wachendorf. After that, the route took us through many smaller towns, full of enthusiastic spectators. We reached another checkpoint in Puschendorf, before we returned to Nuremberg where we all finished in high spirits. For us, it was our first time in this part of Germany and we were very suprised by its beauty and the enthusiastic people. Someone said it was the German Mille Miglia and we agree that the athmosphere was indeed similar, though in a more German sort of way. Everywhere, little towns were flooded with local people enjoying the procession of cars, even though it was raining. It was a great evening and a great start to the Classic Sprint weekend!
The starting point was quite different from the day before, taking place at a venue out of town which was also hosting a separate classic car and tractor gathering. This put participants in a good mood for driving, and they duly set off, following the Altmühltal river for most of the day. In Heilsbronn was a checkpoint, followed by a visit to a truly superb location, Fort Lichtenau. The fort contained a surprise checkpoint, which required us to do a spot of driving within its historic walls.
The route took us further uphill, rewarding us with beautiful sights across the valley, towards the Ellingen Residence, as described in the preview, where we were to have our lunch break in the Biergarten.
The afternoon took us through the beautiful historical town of Weißenburg, then led us along more countryside roads and through checkpoints in the small towns. One town particularly worth mentioning for its beauty was Greding, were we crossed paths with drivers on the Donnau Classic Rallye.
The route continued through Kipfenberg, with a time trial in Wülzburg. This was at a very photogenic location in another historic building, the Rummelsberger Diakonie. The last kilometres passed by with smiles upon our faces, leading us back to the finish at the market square in Weißenburg where, in the evening, the drivers’ party took place. What a day. We enjoyed it so much. The breathtaking sights, with hills to go up full throttle, to lakes, to historical towns with many enthusiastic Germans waving at us. Families made special outings to watch the old cars, the perfect way to encourage them while they're young! We are looking forward to tomorrow, the last day of this year's rally.
The last day arrived too quickly, kicking off with a variant to the well-known Le Mans start, which was great fun although not so easy for everyone. Some cars had problems with starting and your editor had problems with getting the car in the right gear....
The first time trial was again at the Diakonie in Wülzburg, where we were able to look back at Weißenburg – literally and figuratively. The roads were again amazing, we sometimes had the idea they made the roads just for touring. Beautiful. The tempurature was rising which made it a challenge for both cars and drivers. The PWC team was chased by two Gullwing Mercedes-Benz which gave a great sight for all the enthusiastic people aside the route. We drove through an Oldtimertreffen in Neumarkt, with a presentation of the cars.
The coffee stop was at the classic car dealership Löhlein Classics, and the route finished at the Norisring. The street circuit was already prepared for the DTM races, which were discussed with enthusiasm by the drivers of the classics.
