Back to back: Lamborghini, Ferrari or Maserati GT?

US motor manufacture may have been dominated for decades by the ‘Big Three’ — in Italian sports cars something similar has perhaps been going on for many years. And auctioneer RM Sotheby’s will be selling some prime examples of these three in Monaco on 14th May — Lamborghini, Ferrari and Maserati Gran Turismos from the 1960s, bodied respectively by Touring, Pininfarina and Vignale. Let’s have a look at them here.

1967 Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 by Touring

The Lamborghini is a 1967 400 GT 2+2 sold new to the US and so an American specification car with the 3.9-litre V12 engine mated to the all-syncro gearbox. Unfortunately, and remarkably perhaps, not much of its history appears to be known, other than that it spent some time in the Netherlands in a brown shade before being returned to the US and repainted in its correct Grigio Argento again. A reason to avoid it or perhaps a reason to buy one relatively cheaply?

1961 Ferrari 250 GTE 2+2 Series I by Pininfarina

Estimated at €300,000 to €340,000 it’s not exactly cheap and is expected to sell similarly priced to the Ferrari 250 GTE 2+2 of 1961 in the same sale. That car seems to have a much better history though. It was delivered new to a company near Paris and was soon sold to a French politician. It remained in France under several new owners and was restored in 1994/95 repainted in silver in 2009, the engine rebuilt and the body repainted once again in its original red, only to be verified by Ferrari Classiche in 2020.

1967 Maserati Mexico 4.7 Coupé by Vignale

Expected to sell at less than half the price of the Lamborghini or Ferrari is a 1967 Maserati Mexico with its 4.7-litre V8. We don’t believe it to be only half as desirable though — what a cracking car! The Vignale design is beautiful and the colour combination of Rosso Cordoba with a Senape interior is just perfect to the model. It comes with five-speed gearbox, air conditioning and power steering and was originally sold to New York. It spent time in Florida and in France later in its life. "The ideal candidate for comfortable long-distance touring," adds the seller.
