Do we celebrate the Excalibur?

While enjoying the many beautiful automobiles at last week's InterClassics & Topmobiel in Maastricht, we walked past this 1986 Excalibur. Normally we don't give that kind of car a second glance, but then we stopped in our tracks. We suddenly realized we had forgotten its birthday! Last year it had been fifty years ago that Brook Stevens designed his first Excalibur. Based on a Studebaker chassis it had the looks of a 1928 Mercedes SSK, but power was by a 289 cubic inch Studebaker V8 engine. Over the years the sporty looking car developed into a luxury town car, very suitable for ferrying newlywed couples to the church. Today, fifty years on, what do we think of the Excalibur... a classic in its own way? We wonder about your verdict...? Do we put the sword in the stone? Or give it the axe?
