About tough to crack puzzle #128: Ghia-Aigle VW Type 1

The colourful – and pretty if we may say so – puzzle car we presented to you last week was Volkswagen-based, oh yes. And it seemed familiar to George Cassidy too, who wrote: “It looks like it has something to do with Karmann Ghia. Just saying, I know that’s not going to cut it.” Well, George, it has! In fact the Karmann-Ghia had just been launched when Ghia’s Swiss subsidiary Ghia-Aigle came with their own version – this car. And rumour has it that it was in fact Karmann-Ghia rather then Beetle based, too.

While he was not alone in knowing it, Jury member Alan Spencer was the only one to give a satisfying answer. He wrote: “1957 Ghia-Aigle, built by a subsidiary of Carrozzeria Ghia based in Switzerland. It used a Karmann Ghia platform, but in my opinion, is not as well proportioned as the Type 1 K-G.” Well, that’s amatter of taste. “It’s currently owned by the VW museum.” He’s right there. Volkswagen bought the car in 2000 in a derelict state and had it restored by a specialist between 2006 and 2008. Job done. And pretty good, too.
