About Tough to crack car puzzle #173: 1969 Jerrari

Last week saw some stormy news from Italy: Lamborghini unveiled their ‘Super Sports Utility Vehicle’ - the Urus. They have some kind of heritage with the crazy Cheetah, LM001 and LM002 which all preceded the Urus, but the new Rambo Lambo remains a bit of shock. Ferrari may be the next in line, although they do not have the legacy of a four-wheel-drive. Or do they? Last week’s puzzle car may not have been an official Ferrari 4x4, but it was one! This was the Jerrari – a Jeep with the heart and soul of a Ferrari, dreamt up by and built for car collector extraordinaire Bill Harrah.

Not too many of you knew it, or so it seemed, and of those not all liked it. Fritz Hegeman wrote: “Oh, what a sad mix!” His answer was spot on, though, just like Luc Ryckaert’s and Gerd Klioba’s. But most points go to Alan Spencer this time. His full answer: “Needing a high-performance 4x4 to drive around the Lake Tahoe and Reno area, casino and hotel magnate Bill Harrah approached Enzo Ferrari to create a 4x4 Ferrari and was refused. So Harrah built the vehicle himself by grafting the front of a 1969 Ferrari 365GT, with 4.4 litre V-12 and 5-speed manual, onto a 1970 Jeep Wagoneer. Hence ‘Jerrari’. In 1977, Harrah built a second Jerrari, this time installing the same Ferrari power plant in a standard Wagoneer. The first Jerrari (the quiz car) then received a 350ci Chevy engine. Were the Jerraris the inspiration for Lamborghini's Urus?!”
