A German mystery Monday
When we received this photo from our reader Jerry from Tucson, Arizona, new questions just came up. It is unclear to us what car it is. It is even unclear to us if it is a convertible or a coupe.
Our first idea was that this is a Volkswagen, looking at the wheelhubs. But it is not a Karmann Ghia or something similar. Perhaps an early Porsche? But the 356 had a round bonnet and a different shape. So maybe you can tell us.
Perhaps the license number BR 491 463 can help you. We believe BR stands for Brown Company that insured cars in Kansas. The location seems to be a show, maybe the car was used to promote a product (there are 2 cans in front of the car).

Drews Cabriolet 1949-51. First shown in Rheydt motorshow in 1949. A VW in a sporty dress.

This is a German special handcrafted car by Karosseriebau Drews located in Wuppertal-Barmen. Look at this link: http://www.fomcc.de/fordsetzung/10_1/10_1_6.htm. The story says, about 150 of this VW käfer-based Sport-Cabriolet were build 1949-51 . The numberplate is a typical german plate used after WWII 1948-1956. "BR" means "British Occupation Zone Rheinland" and "491" was the id-number used for Wuppertal were Drews had its factory.

Das ist ein Cabriolet, 2-sitzig, hergestellt von der Firma Drews aus Wuppertal auf dem Fahrgestell des VW "Käfer" in den 50-er Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts; geringe Stückzahlen (keine Fahrgestell-Belieferung durch das VW-Werk); es dürften wohl weniger als 10 Stück davon bis heute überlebt haben. Die Firma Dress wurde 1945 gegründet, besteht meines Wissens aber heute nicht mehr, zumindest nicht als Karosseriebau-Firma. "BR" auf dem Nummernschild steht für Britische (Besatzungs)Zone Rheinland.
