The Jaguar XJ220 traces its origins to a small group of engineers and designers who, inspired by the marque's success in Group C competition, began developing an ambitious supercar project in their spare time. Known internally as the "Saturday Club," the team envisioned a machine that would combine race-derived technology with the speed, refinement, and presence expected of a flagship Jaguar.
When the XJ220 debuted at the 1988 Birmingham International Motor Show, it immediately became one of the most talked-about automobiles of the era. Its name referenced a targeted top speed of 220 mph, while Keith Helfet's dramatic design delivered the visual impact to support the claim. Long, wide, and exceptionally low, the concept reflected Jaguar's determination to compete at the highest level of the emerging supercar segment.
Development proceeded rapidly following the model's overwhelmingly positive reception, with Jaguar announcing a limited production run in December 1989 and entrusting engineering and assembly to JaguarSport, the joint venture between Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw Racing. Introduced in 1992, the production XJ220 featured aluminum bodywork over an aluminum honeycomb chassis, Group C race-derived suspension, and a 542-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 developed by TWR from the engine originally created for the MG Metro 6R4 Group B rally program. Paired with a five-speed manual transmission, the package delivered extraordinary performance, including a verified top speed exceeding 212 mph.
Although conceived during an era defined by outright speed, the XJ220 remained distinctly Jaguar. A Connolly leather-trimmed interior, refined road manners, and elegant styling distinguished it from many of its contemporaries and helped secure its place among the most significant supercars of the 1990s. Each example was hand-assembled at JaguarSport's purpose-built facility in Bloxham, Oxfordshire, where production ultimately totaled 277 examples.
Completed at JaguarSport in Bloxham, Oxfordshire, England on 19 November 1993, this left-hand-drive XJ220 was finished in Spa Silver over a Smoke Grey Connolly leather interior. Its ownership history is remarkably straightforward compared to most examples produced some three decades ago. According to a letter from its original owner, the XJ220 remained with Jaguar Cars following the original purchaser's default and subsequent litigation for breach of contract. Once the matter was settled in 1997, the car was sold directly by Jaguar Cars U.K. through Duncan Hamilton Ltd., resulting in a four-year delay before its first retail sale. The owner recalls that the XJ220 was "essentially new, with its odometer showing delivery miles only."
The XJ220 remained in its home country until 2003 when it was approved for U.S. import under "Show or Display." Since its importation, the XJ220 has remained with its original owner until 2026, seeing only light use while displayed in a private collection. The owner further notes that it "has not been in any accidents or repaired bodily in any way and has no paintwork damage." It remains in exceptionally original condition with its Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate confirming that it retains its original engine, transmission, and body.
Offered with original books in a leather XJ220-branded folder, parts manual, tools, center-lock socket, and importation documents, among other delivery items, this remarkably preserved, single private owner XJ220 represents one of the most original and best-documented examples of Jaguar's landmark supercar. Showing just 2,645 kilometers from new (approximately 1,644 miles) at the time of cataloging, it offers an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of only 277 XJ220s ever produced, presented in its iconic Spa Silver livery and retaining the originality, provenance, and low mileage sought by the most discerning collectors.
