"They're the horses that pull the plow," Enzo Ferrari is said to have remarked. Whether apocryphal or not, the quote perfectly reflects il Commendatore's long-lived conviction that Ferrari's greatest Gran Turismos belonged with their twelve cylinders mounted ahead of the driver.

Yet for more than two decades, Ferrari's flagship V12 berlinettas had embraced a mid-engined layout. In 1996, the Maranello marque returned to its traditional formula with the unveiling of the 550 Maranello, reviving the front-engined V12 berlinetta for the first time since the legendary 365 GTB/4 Daytona. Presented at the Nürburgring, the new flagship was demonstrated by Scuderia Ferrari drivers Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine, joined by Formula One World Champion Niki Lauda.

Penned by Pininfarina and clothed in elegantly proportioned lightweight aluminum bodywork, the 550 Maranello was powered by a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V12 producing 478 horsepower and capable of propelling the car beyond 199 mph. While Ferrari embraced paddle-shift technology, the 550 remained faithful to tradition with a six-speed manual transmission featuring the iconic, unmistakable open metal shift gate.

This exceptionally low-mileage example remains today in a condition remarkably close to how it was delivered new on 1st June 1998 by Algar Ferrari of Philadelphia to its first Delaware-based owner. Finished in the elegant and quintessential Ferrari combination of red Rosso Corsa with Pelle Beige leather upholstery, it was fitted with its five-spoke BBS alloy wheels and further specified with the rare factory optional Schedoni six-piece leather luggage set.

Since then, the car has been in the care of two long-term custodians over the course of decades, whose careful ownership has ensured that it remains today complete with both original sets of keys and its full factory documentation housed in the original Schedoni leather pouch, including the Owner's Manual, Warranty Card and Owner's Service Book etc., as well as the original 550 Maranello and Connolly brochures, together with the aforementioned highly prized factory luggage set, its toolkit, and car cover.

Recognizing its highly collectible nature, an application for a Certificato di Autenticità was submitted to Ferrari Classiche in 2018 and subsequently approved, resulting in the issuance of the coveted "Red Book," attesting to its authenticity and accompanying the car today, while last year, it received nearly $40,000 in comprehensive service and maintenance by Ferrari of Palm Beach, with detailed invoice on file. Engine work included replacing the timing belts, rollers, valve cover gaskets, and cam seals, along with installing new intake manifold gaskets, clamps, and gearbox cover seals before a thorough leak test and detail. The interior and trim were refreshed with a replacement dash top, binnacle, center gauge pod, airbag door, and rear panel below the glass. The extensive overhaul concluded with a Ferrari multi-point inspection.

A superbly preserved time-capsule U.S. example showing just 527 miles from new, this 550 Maranello is among the finest collector-grade examples to emerge in recent years. Serviced and complete with accessories and its Ferrari Classiche Red Book, it offers a rare opportunity to acquire an unrepeatable, benchmark front-engined V12 Grand Tourer.
