After a long and successful production run, the DB6 was the swansong for Aston Martin’s flagship grand tourer platform. The preceding DB4 and DB5 heavily influenced the look and feel of the DB6, which was revealed at the 1965 London Motor Show intended to represent the long-lived model at its ultimate evolution. Just as with the earlier Aston Martin models, the DB6 was available in either high output Vantage form, for increased performance, or Volante specification for drop-top motoring. The DB6 Vantage Volante combined the best of both worlds, offering customers a four-seat convertible with the thrill of the Vantage engine that added some 40 brake horsepower to Tadek Marek’s standard straight-six design.
Only 29 examples of the DB6 were made in Vantage Volante guise; a modest portion of the DB6 Volante’s 140-strong production run. Just 13 of those higher output cars were powered by the engine numbered with the suffix “/VC”, intended for the DB6 Vantage between build periods for Mark I and II cars, featuring a reprofiled inlet camshaft.
This DB6 Vantage Volante, chassis DBVC/3738/R, was marked complete by the Newport Pagnell factory on 10 July 1969. The Aston Martin was finished in Olive over a Black Connolly leather interior with Black hood, as it is finished today, and was distributed via the dealer Eton Motor Group, Airways Garage. According to the accompanying heritage certificate issued by Aston Martin Heritage Trust, the car was built with factory equipment that included power-assisted steering, power-operated aerial, chrome wheels with three-ear hub caps, two front seatbelts, and no Vantage badge on the rear. The car was first registered on a number plate local to the London area.
After a series of long-term owners based in the United Kingdom, the car was sold at auction in 2015. The consigning owner then acquired the DB6 through a United Kingdom-based car dealer in November 2016, at which point the car was exported and registered in Belgium. In the care of the vendor, the Aston Martin was entrusted for restoration with a selection of Europe’s leading workshops. Merreyt Classics Cars of Ternat, Belgium, overhauled the engine and installed new pistons. Other workshops including Mekabox and Vancheri Automobile were involved as the bodywork was taken back to bare metal and refinished in an original Aston Martin colour. The impressive history file includes a wealth of invoices for previous work carried out from the 1970s to the present day, which also help to piece together the car’s history, further to a folder with photos of the restoration. Since the restoration, the DB6 has been used sparingly, acting as a family wedding car and returning to British shores for a road trip to Goodwood Revival. The car was last serviced in September 2025.
Now presenting with its matching-numbers engine in rare “/VC” form, and retaining its factory-correct colour combination, this drop-top Aston Martin would be an ideal companion for summer drives and the luxurious touring holidays it was designed for.
Please note this lot has entered the UK on a temporary import bond, which must be cancelled either by exporting the lot outside of the UK on an approved Bill of Lading with supporting customs documentation or by paying the applicable VAT and import duties to have the lot remain in the UK.
